Time for Change

Contributor: Sarah Wright, RN, Weight of the Fox Valley Program Manager

Have you made a new year’s resolution to exercise more, eat better, or lose weight? Or maybe you’ve given up because resolutions haven’t worked for you in the past. If so, you are not alone….you’re just human.

Maybe the problem is that we have the “wrong” goals. Maybe losing weight, eating healthy, and exercising shouldn’t be our GOALS, but rather TOOLS to help us have the BEST HEALTH possible. Research shows that how we eat and move can have a profound impact on our health, providing a strong defense against acute illnesses, like influenza or the common cold, or chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

The answer seems so simple, yet can be so difficult. Reaching goals takes time. Here are some tips to help you succeed:

  1. Break goals down into smaller, more achievable steps. If you need to lose 30 pounds, start with a smaller goal of replacing sugar-sweetened beverages with something like hot green tea with a splash of honey. When this becomes habit, celebrate (avoiding unhealthy foods as rewards), and add another goal.
  1. Remember that perfection is not required. Being human means being imperfect, and accepting this will bring you closer to reaching your goals. If you have a bad day, strive to do better tomorrow.
  1. Question what motivates you. Is it a one-time event like a wedding, or a lifelong commitment to your health? Remember that every day you live healthier is one step closer to your optimum health.

You CAN succeed where you may have failed in the past. Look at resolutions with a new frame of mind, and RESOLVE to make your health a priority this year!
